ADHD in Context

3 CEs APPROVED

Abstract: The course aims to help attendees gain an understanding of the experience of adults with ADHD through the lens of contextual behavioral science. This workshop will identify common frameworks to conceptualize ADHD functions while rooting intervention in functional contextualism. To enhance comprehension, the course incorporates experiential components. These may include using media, engaging in role-play exercises, and employing various strategies to immerse participants in the lived experiences of individuals with ADHD. This hands-on approach will help participants develop a felt sense of what it’s like to have ADHD and understand the interactions of those frameworks and their consequences on ADHD functioning. Participants will also learn how to select an appropriate functional framework based on clients' needs, meeting them where they are at.

ACT Beyond Basics: Elevating Your Practice with Self-as-Context Interventions and Case Conceptualizations

Registration Now Open | 3 CEs Approved for Social Workers, Pending For Psychologists

Abstract: Many clients come to therapy because they are struggling with issues about their sense of self such as low self-esteem, negative self-talk, and difficulty practicing self-compassion.. From a psychological flexibility perspective informed by key insights from Relational Frame Theory (RFT), inflexible “selfing” is a core feature of these issues. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)  is well-suited to help clients to discover new and more workable ways to relate to themselves. Unfortunately, many ACT therapists tend to shy away from self-as-context interventions because they can seem mysterious, theoretical, or confusing.

This will be an intermediate/advanced workshop for intermediate/advanced ACT practitioners. The foci of this highly experiential training opportunity will be to demystify self-work in ACT by presenting practical, RFT-informed strategies to conceptualize issues related to the self and to invite clients to experiment with more effective ways to “self.”

ACTivating Health: A Skills Building Workshop to Help People with Chronic Medical Conditions

Many clients will directly experience a health-related issue during the therapeutic course. These individuals often invest much of their energy towards controlling their symptoms and tend to avoid meaningful activities. This interactive workshop combines didactic (30%) and experiential (70%) methods and is designed for practitioners familiar with the basic tenets of ACT. Drs. Martin and Rhodes will harness their combined knowledge and expertise from decades of experience imbedded in the medical field to teach attendees how to use the power of language and experiential learning to target health behavior change such as increasing daily functioning (work/school, physical activity, social activities, pain coping) and health-promoting behaviors (medication adherence, nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, and sleep).
